In an effort to support the rejuvenation of Crete as a prime tourism destination, researchers at the Center of Excellence in Food, Tourism & Leisure (CoEFTL) have published a study examining the role of central government tourism policy in developing sports tourism. This paper, authored by Leonidas Gaitanakis, Ourania Vrondou, and CoEFTL’s Stella Leivadi, explores how sport tourism can serve as a tool for diversifying Crete’s traditional mass tourism model, aiming to enhance the island’s appeal and competitive edge in the global market. The research highlights the critical role government and stakeholders play in shaping policy and fostering innovation in the tourism sector.
