In an industry praised for its economic impact but often neglectful of those who keep it running, a new project promises to turn the spotlight onto the invisible workforce of Europe’s tourism sector. Launched by a multinational coalition, the FUTOURWORK initiative seeks to overhaul how millions of tourism and hospitality workers—many of them women, migrants, and youth—experience their jobs.
Led by the University of Westminster and in collaboration with The American College of Greece, via the Center of Excellence in Food, Tourism and Leisure (CoEFTL), FUTOURWORK will address the sector’s most pressing labor issues, from gig work instability to the widening gaps in worker well-being. Through extensive surveys, interviews, and storytelling, the project seeks to bridge gaps in the industry by establishing inclusive social dialogue practices and creating a benchmark for worker satisfaction and safety.
At a time when job insecurity and vacancy rates cast a long shadow over tourism’s future, FUTOURWORK is more than just another research endeavor; it’s a call to reimagine work itself as an act of dignity and to lessen the exploitative weight of the industry.
Stay tuned for updates as FUTOURWORK begins its transformative journey in January 2025.
