In a timely study, researchers Dimitra Kostaki and CoEFTL’s Irene Karayianni explore how the sudden shift to remote education with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic affected student engagement at a private American college in Greece. Research findings indicate that student engagement took a toll by both technical difficulties and home distractions, while students with higher computer self-efficacy were better able to overcome to some degree any technical issues. Despite these challenges, students appreciated the flexibility and convenience of online learning, although impaired concentration remained a primary concern. The study provides pertinent suggestions for improving student engagement as online education becomes an increasingly prominent part of higher education.
