The development of Information and Communication Technologies (AI, VR and IOT) has created tension between the established “old world” and new paradigms in promoting cultural tourism. Are these virtual enhancements an advantage or a disadvantage to authentic cultural experiences? How to breathe new life into age-old cultural heritage while preserving its soul? Dr. Vrasida and Dr. Skourtis explored a “co-creative” pathway that allows tourists to participate in and contribute to the heritage of the Region of Attica.
Their paper, titled “Grounding The Cloud: Co-creating The Cultural Tourism Experience In The Virtual Representation Era“, was presented in the 1st INTOCUS international conference module “Education and New Technologies in the Tourism Industry”. Ultimately, the insights presented at INTOCUS underscore a new era in tourism, where virtual experiences and physical heritage coalesce to create something deeply meaningful. As Greece navigates its path forward, the challenge will be to embrace these digital advances without sacrificing the authenticity that has captivated travelers for millennia.
