Abstract
Academic self-efficacy has attracted researchers’ and educators’ attention as it can affect important aspects of student life, such as academic performance. Relevant literature supports that academic self-efficacy is positively related to agentic engagement, which refers to students’ active and constructive contribution into the flow of instruction they receive, and negatively to academic entitlement. The present study aimed to explore these two relationships at an undergraduate level, since previous literature mostly focused on younger students. Participants of the online survey were 126 undergraduate college students in Deree-The American College of Greece, recruited through convenience and voluntary sampling. They were asked to complete the Agentic Engagement Scale (AES), the Academic Efficacy subscale of the Patterns of Adaptive Learning Scales (PALS), and the Academic Entitlement Scale. Results supported the hypotheses and showed that academic self-efficacy was positively correlated with agentic engagement and negatively with academic entitlement. The study aims to shed light to some of the student-related factors that contribute to positive academic outcomes.
