Abstract

The current medical education landscape is marked by numerous challenges, including the need to absorb vast amounts of information and terminology, apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, and overcome the typical forgetting that occurs post-graduation. Compounding this issue, the practice of medicine and Continuing Medical Education require that professionals maintain their knowledge with minimal-to-zero margin for error. This presentation provides an overview of the basic processes that underlie learning and memory during encoding, storage, and retrieval. Furthermore, it discusses fundamental memory techniques, focusing on the levels of processing theory, the appropriate use of retrieval cues, transfer appropriate processing, and mnemonic devices. By understanding and applying these cognitive strategies, medical educators and students can enhance learning efficiency and improve the retention of critical knowledge, thus addressing the primary challenges faced in medical education.
