Abstract

The purpose of the current student was to examine the relationship between student-instructor connectedness, instructor’s immediacy, and student engagement. Based on the available literature, it was hypothesized that student-instructor connectedness and instructor’s verbal and non-verbal immediacy would be positively correlated with student engagement. Thirty undergraduate college students were recruited through voluntary sampling and completed an online questionnaire that included demographic questions, the Student Engagement Scale, the Immediacy Behavior Scale and the Connectedness Subscale from the Student-Instructor Relationship Scale (SIRS). In a nutshell, the analyses indicated that both instructor’s immediacy and connectedness were positively associated with student engagement and predicted it significantly. These results may add to the literature addressing educational interventions and thus, pave the way for progress in the field.
