Abstract
Student engagement has been associated with academic success and student well-being, thus, it is important to investigate its antecedents. This study aimed to examine the relationship between student engagement and student-instructor rapport and peer support. It was expected that there would be a positive association between student-instructor rapport and student engagement, and between student engagement and classmate support. An online survey was conducted among 34 undergraduate students in a private American college in Greece, recruited through convenience and voluntary sampling. They were asked to complete the Student Engagement Scale, the Student-Instructor Rapport Scale, and the Peer Support Scale. Student engagement was positively associated with student-instructor rapport. There was no correlation between student engagement and classmate support. Additional exploratory analyses showed a positive correlation between student engagement and the frequency that the student had met with this instructor during office hours, and between student-instructor rapport and classmate support. The results of this study offer potential implications for course instructors, including designing specific office hours that aim to encourage student engagement.
