CoEFTL researchers took part in a recent study that reveals the significant economic benefits of recurring rural sport events through direct participant spending. Focusing on a small-scale mountain running event in a rural Greek destination, the study analyzes how tourists’ spending on accommodation, meals, and other tourist spending, such as souvenirs, boosts local economies. The research found that event participants spent an average of a few hundred euros altogether, with respondents from a further radius spending more on average. These findings emphasize the financial advantages rural areas can gain from hosting sport events, especially in regions that seek sustainable economic growth through tourism.
