Sophia Efstathiou works across philosophy of science, applied ethics, and art to responsibly respond to complex societal challenges like climate change, health and inclusion. She has published on the impossibility of addressing grand societal challenges scientifically, on the need to seriously consider improvisation alongside goal-setting for addressing the SDGs, and on how technologies can block ethics from happening in face-to-face encounters. Efstathiou is teaching faculty at The American College of Greece (Deree) and Senior Researcher in the Programme for Applied Ethics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her work has been awarded Horizon, NSF, Research Council of Norway, Max Planck and White funding and invited by the Athens Biennale, Ars Electronica and Cornell Biennial festivals. She is currently the co-PI of JPI Healthy Diet, Healthy Life grant ComMEATted: Committed to the responsible development of meat replacement products and practices (2024-2027), and was the Principal Investigator of Norwegian Research Council trans-sector collaboration grant MEATigation: Towards sustainable meat-use in Norwegian food practices for climate mitigation (2020-2025). She holds a Master of Physics (Warwick, 2000), an MA in Philosophy (UCSD, 2006) and PhD in Philosophy and Science Studies (UCSD, 2009).
